Project Description
This is an inspiration for metal wine charms themed for Thanksgiving. These were able to be engraved using the IR module for the D1 (and should be a fun project for the F1!).
Project Overview
I started with selection of different metal charms, silver and copper finish.
I measured them to give me an idea of my working room for the designs.
I drew a circle of the same size as the actual charm I am making.
I imported an image of some line art that I wanted to etch into the metal charm.
Using the image editor I cleaned up any background or stray marks.
I centered the image in the circle using the align functions of XCS from the menu.
I selected "Silver" from the Materials drop down to give me the settings for engraving.
Important: IR laser has a smaller laser focus so I find a minimum of 200 lines per CM is needed to make the design look solid.
For the outline circle, I set power to 1% and speed as fast as possible because I find having the outline shape useful in framing and centering the IR laser. Setting it to minimum power will not etch the metal.
When you preview the job, I like to set my "Origin" to the center top shown here to match my guide in my work are shown below.
Shown here, I made a guide on my work area for circle charms, this helps me visually align the focus laser and my work piece. Note the laser focus point is top and center like the preview window.
Use the built in focus arm to align the IR laser to the workpiece. Accurate focus is more critical with the IR laser than the Blue laser so ensure the focus length is correct.
Frame the work piece to verify it is aligned as you planned.
After framing start the job.
Activate the job with the button the D1.
This job took about 4 minutes.
I assembled the newly etched charm with some other beads and wire clip to complete the wine glass charm.
